Our shop is small enough to give you our personal attention, but large enough to fill most any need.

Our History

Around 1901, in Hutchinson, KS, Walter and Augusta Griffen began a market garden business called the Yankee Produce Company. They moved by covered wagon to the Hannibal area with their children; Carrie, Vernon, Joe, Alta, and Merritt.The industrious family constructed a greenhouse suited for both vegetable and flower growing.
Joe Griffen and his mother made frequent trips to Hannibal and the immigrant town of Ilasco to sell their wagonload of fresh vegetables. Often on a return trip they would stop at a stable and put on a load of manure for use in the gardens. |
| On August 1, 1915, Griffen's Flowers had their grand opening at 316 Broadway in downtown Hannibal - a short three blocks away from the mighty Misssissippi River, and three blocks away from the boyhood home of Hannibal's favorite son; Samuel Clemens, also known as Mark Twain. |

| By the 1920's, Griffen's Flowers had moved to a larger store in downtown Hannibal. It featured a fish pond with live goldfish and a fountain in the window.The Griffen family was active in the community. Also memorable were the scuffles between Merritt and Joe that caused several local restaurant owners to worry what the Griffen boys might break. |

301 Broadway |
In 1939, Griffen's Flowers relocated to 301 Broadway. The flower shop thrived on this corner for 51 years. During the WWII years, the business began to attract the next generation of the family including Dan, the son of Joe Griffen, who chose to work at the store after his service in the war. |

| By 1990, the flower shop had outgrown the downtown location, having grown in size and also bringing in the next generation of florists, including three of Dan's children; Richard, Dorothy, and Amy and her husband Doug. A property in the center of town was purchased, and a new larger store was built. Griffen's Flowers began a new chapter on Oct. 18, 1992 with the grand opening of their current store at 2919 St. Mary's Ave. in Hannibal. |
